How often is enough?
Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and HETAS both encourage having a chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood, and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels. These are useful starting points rather than a substitute for looking at how the appliance is actually used. A stove that runs most days through autumn and winter, or a flue that has previously collected heavy soot or tar, may need attention more often.
When should I book?
A good time is before the main heating season, while there is still time to deal with any problem found. If you burn wood and arrange two sweeps a year, the second is commonly booked after the busiest part of the heating season. A chimney should also be checked after a long period without use, particularly if birds, debris or damp may have entered.
Do not wait for the diary date if something changes. Smoke spilling back into the room, a weak or slow draw, soot falling into the appliance, a strong sooty or tar-like smell, bird or nesting debris, or a carbon monoxide alarm all deserve prompt attention. Stop using the appliance if you are concerned about safe operation.
What does a routine sweep cover?
A professional sweep removes soot and loose deposits using a method suitable for the chimney or liner. The service also provides an opportunity to identify visible warning signs and discuss fuel, burning habits and future maintenance. Keep the certificate or record supplied after the visit, as it can be useful for your own maintenance history and for some insurers.
A routine sweep is not a full CCTV inspection. A camera inspection is a separate service used when the inside of the flue needs a closer examination—for example after a suspected blockage, damage, installation concern, chimney fire or recurring performance problem.
