What Really Happens During a Chimney Sweep?

A chimney sweep can look like a simple job from the outside: arrive, sweep the flue and leave. The part that matters is how carefully each visit is handled from start to finish.
At Bingley Chimney, we work in homes across Bingley and the surrounding area, from modern stove installations to older open fires. No two chimneys are quite the same, and that shapes what we do.
We start with your home
Before sweeping, we prepare and protect the area around the stove or fireplace. It takes care to do the work thoroughly and leave the room as we found it. That should be an ordinary part of a professional visit, but it is one we never take for granted.
The chimney sets the approach
A lined stove flue and an older masonry chimney can need different treatment. We look at the appliance and flue, then choose the method that suits them. We use modern or traditional sweeping methods as appropriate; the point is to do the job well, not to insist on one method for every home.
Sweeping also gives us a chance to notice things that may need attention. If we see an issue with the stove, flue or fireplace, we explain it clearly. A full camera inspection is a separate service, but we can recommend one when a closer look inside the chimney would help.
When a routine sweep isn't routine
Occasionally we find an obstruction, such as an old bird's nest. We explain what we have found and what the next step involves. Nest removal is specialist work and is subject to wildlife rules, so it is never something we simply treat as part of an ordinary sweep.
Before we leave
We finish by cleaning the working area, issuing the relevant sweep certificate and talking through anything you need to know. That might be a finding from the visit, advice on fuel and burning, or a question about getting the best from your stove.
A good sweep leaves the room tidy, gives you a clear record of the work and makes sense of anything we have found. That's the standard we work to on every visit.
